Stroll along the Kalamazoo River, watching the beautiful homes and boats lining the river view, or walk thru the thriving downtown filled with quaint shops and art galleries. Once you’ve worked up your appetite, make sure to stop by for one of Saugatuck’s favorite places for breakfast or lunch.

This café/diner has a casual/home-style atmosphere, serving up a wide variety of breakfast menu items served all day, from whole grain griddle cakes, Ida’s French toast (“we make this like all the Greek diners in Chicago used to”), an assortment of cooked eggs, including “basted” (which is similar to poached), and a large selection of scrambles. Since we are big fans of breakfast, my companion had the Steak & Eggs…an eight ounce Angus sizzler with basted eggs, thinly sliced fried potatoes, and toast: pronounced yummy! I had the whole grain griddle cakes and sausage, having the nice balance of comfort food with a bit of a healthy twist with the whole grain. We loved that they served Tazo tea and fresh squeezed orange juice to nicely complement our meal.

Lunch selections (after 11am) include pasta dishes aplenty “made with our own Marinara sauce, as Wayne’s great grandmother made it for one hundred years,” soups and salads, and a large selection of sandwiches, including meatball, Italian sausage, chicken and the basic BLT are also available to order. Daily breakfast and lunch specials are posted on the board by the front door.

Service was friendly, and in the winter time, the vast majority of the patrons were locals in conversation with the staff. As we get closer to summer, the restaurant will be filled with both locals and tourists alike, so you might expect a short wait. Make sure to bring cash with you, as no credit or debit cards are accepted.

As we got ready to explore the downtown shops, we couldn’t help but take a few of the tasty, oversized muffins to go! Don’t forget to try one when visit this “tried and true” café in Saugatuck. Stephanie Brooks is a contributing writer for Blue Star Highway
