The Sound of Music is a touching and poignant Rodgers and Hammerstein musical that tells a story of struggle and triumph in a way that is both entertaining and humorous. In Nonnberg Abbey in Austria, the Mother Abbess decides to send former novice Maria out of the abbey to become temporary governess to the children of Captain Georg von Trapp. Maria teaches the children how to play, to sing, and enjoy life. Against this innocence; the ominous rumblings of the imminent German Anschluss can be heard. Featuring one of the most memorable scores ever written, this family friendly musical is truly a must see for all ages!

What: Music legend and Grammy Award winner Dave Alvin returns to The Arts District and The Livery's Main Stage with an all female band featuring some of the best musical talent going. The Guilty Women includes Cindy Cashdollar, Nina Gerber, Laurie Lewis, Christy McWilson, Sarah Brown, Amy Farris and Lisa Pankratz and together with Alvin, they're blazing a musical trail for others to follow. -- While 'Dave Alvin & The Guilty Women' is a relatively new commodity, Alvin was confident the chemistry would be right. -- "The reality that we'd never played together as a group and that there was no time to rehearse before our debut performance didn't bother me at all. I knew that they were all master musicians who could easily handle any sort of song I could throw at them. And that's exactly what they did and they did it effortlessly and beautifully." -- Cost: $20 adv., $25 day of show

What: This year's theme, "Thunder on the Lake" highlights the newest event added to the Summer Festival line-up, The Super Boat Great Lakes Grand Prix. The theme also represents the "thunder" produced by the Drum Corps International World Regional Competition in August also held here in Michigan City. And it's a reflection of the "thunder" created by our renown fireworks display held right off of the lighthouse pier on the lake. It truly is a thunderous Summer Festival 2009 Season!
Use your imaginations to upgrade the quality of “The Big Parade”. Decorate your unit accordingly and properly and you could win one of these trophies. If you need help or suggestions, call the parade Chairman or any Summer Festival Board Member, we’ll be glad to help.
Unit line-up and numbers will be listed in the News Dispatch a few days prior to the parade. A checkpoint will be at the main Post Office (corner of Highway 12 and Washington Street) for number verification IF NEEDED. Line up numbers can be found in blocks along the curb. You should remove the number card from the block and place it on the right side of your unit.
All pre-judged units, floats, antique vehicles, classic cars, auto clubs and fire trucks must be in line by 12:00 noon. Trophies will be awarded for pre-judged units before the parade starts. All others will be awarded after the parade at the Main Street Theater, 807 Franklin Street. Trophies not picked up will be available at the Mayor’s office Tuesday, July 7, 2009.
Remember . . . all rules on your application will be strictly enforced!
NO THROWING ANYTHING – EVER ! ! ! THIS INCLUDES WATER SPRAYING.
Scheduled to participate in the parade are: Cavaliers, Rosemont, Illinois; Classic Cavaliers Alumni Corps--Rosemont, Illinois; Legends, Portage, Michigan; Blue Stars, LaCrosse, Wisconsin; Glassmen, Toledo, Ohio; Colts, Dubuque, Iowa; Spirit, Jacksonville, Alabama.
A limited number of floats are available for rent. To inquire about this, or if you have any other questions, please contact Parade Chairman Joe Doyle at (219) 874-8213.

What: Nick Moss and his Flip Tops sizzle in live performance hundreds of times a year, bringing their smokin' hot blues to clubs from Cape Cod to southern California. -- Nick Moss knows he has something special happening. -- "I feel like I'm one of the only bands from Chicago that's actually still playing Chicago blues the way people think of Chicago blues. I've gotten [praise] from a lot of the old-timers that have seen us play, even guys that are not from Chicago like Kim Wilson, Rod Piazza, and Charlie Baty and Rick Estrin of Little Charlie & the Nightcats. [They say] it's great to see there's actually a band from Chicago that actually plays Chicago blues." -- No question about it. -- General Admission: $10
