Buchanan's Fresh Brewed Bliss

Nestled in Buchanan, Michigan’s historic downtown is the impressive façade of what used to be the Union State Bank. Today the historic building houses Union Coffee House, a relatively new addition to Buchanan’s eclectic Arts District.

To Molly Thornton, the coffee house’s owner-manager, “it was important to not only recognize what the building was, but to stay true to its history as well.” Thus, the renovations made to the building’s original structure were minimal: the marble walls, black-and-white tiled floor and entryway annex are all original. The kitchen is built into what used to be the bank’s day vault; the barista’s counter was where the tellers stood. Even their name is a nod to the building’s original purpose.

Union Coffee House specializes in light “grab-and-go” breakfasts, flavorful soup-and-sandwich lunch options, and organic Fair Trade coffees ("Fresh... Brewed... Bliss!" as their t-shirts proclaim). Popular sandwiches include the Turkey Gouda (turkey with smoked gouda, raspberry mayo and avocado), and the Three Cheese Deluxe. Despite the heavy feeling its name might imply, this pressed sandwich on dark rye tastes light and fresh – probably thanks to the delicious homemade herb mayo that comes on it.

Vegetarians will be pleased to find that Union’s menu offers a wide selection of options for them as well; all of their “Union Plates” are vegetarian, as are each of their soups. The Black Bean and Avocado Bread plate is a novel take on the more traditional bruschetta; a black bean spread served on toasted ciabatta bread, with avocado and tomato slices and sprouts piled on thick. Union’s Facebook page updates daily, keeping guests current on upcoming live musical talent and their soup-of-the-day.

Live music is a big part of Union’s attraction, too. November 27 is Buchanan’s “White Saturday” – the antithesis to Black Friday, perhaps. Featured at Union Coffeehouse will be artists Mathew Thornton, Riely O’Connor and Molly B. Moon, and monTe micHel bLeu.

Other places to visit while you’re in downtown Buchanan on White Saturday? Almost Home showcases handcrafted jewelry, eclectic furnishings and other gifts, all created by local artisans. FRONT features modern, Euro-hip art, home, and fashion décor. Just across the street from Union Coffeehouse is Alan Robandt Antiques, which hosts “a well-edited collection of interior design resources.” And for when you’re craving that old-fashioned soda pop, the Buchanan Sweet Shop feels like the 50s with their $1.00 sodas.

Whether in the mood for coffee, lunch, or simply a day of holiday shopping – Buchanan’s got the experience you’re looking for. Check it out Saturday, and don’t forget to stop in and say hi to your friendly Union Coffee House baristas.
