My great grandparents opened Fontano's in 1934 in "Little Italy" near downtown Chicago. My Grandmother, Annette Fontano, married Anthony Vitale and Opened Tony and Anne's in Hagar Shores, Michigan in 1957. My mother, Vicki Heimsoth-Rosenthal, married Frank Vitale in 1976, I was 3 years old. My parents, Frank and Vicki Vitale, purchased Tony and Anne's in 1978 from my Grandmother and changed the name to Vitale's Market. I worked along side my father (Frank) for 15 years at the store before pursuing a career in architecture.
In July of 2011 my wife and I opened Vitale's Famous Subs with the intentions of franchising the sandwich business. Unfortunately, my parents are selling their store and we don't have the capitol to buy it, so we changed a few of the signature sandwich names to avoid any conflicts in the future. The long term plan is to open 10-20 sandwich shops and change the name back to Tony and Anne's.
We feel that it would be good to get back to the original name, thus eliminating any confusions with my last name being Rosenthal, although I am very much a Vitale!!!
Enjoy our famous subs!
