Super Boat Great Lakes Grand Prix
What: One of the greatest shows of speed and fun is making its way back to Michigan City in 2012 as the Fourth Annual Great Lakes Grand Prix rumbles onto the southern shore of Lake Michigan once again between July 31 and Aug. 5, 2012. The five-day event will not only feature the world’s best offshore powerboat racers and machines, but outstanding parties, amazing local food and drink, great entertainment, outstanding venues and some of the friendliest and most hospitable folks you’ll ever meet. The Great Lakes Grand Prix is one of seven races on the 2012 Super Boat International schedule and will feature many of the world’s fastest and best looking race boats speeding past Washington Park Beach and the Michigan City Lighthouse at speeds of over 150 miles per hour. It’s also the only offshore powerboat race on the tempestuous and unpredictable waters of Lake Michigan, making the Michigan City stop one of the most competitive in the sport. With nearly a dozen boat classes and more than 25 race boats, along with more than 80,000 fans in attendance, the Great Lakes Grand Prix – in its first year – became one of the most successful first-year events ever and the biggest in Michigan City’s history. And in the years following, crowd numbers and economic impact have grown to over 100,000 spectators and $7 million into the community. So come down to Washington Park Beach in early August and feel the Thunder On Lake Michigan as it roars past at break-neck speeds.
